I rather dislike January.
People use the first of the year as an excuse to finally begin doing the things they should have been doing all along in the form of New Year’s resolutions. They’re suddenly going to be healthier and more responsible and organized and take care of themselves, their families, and their belongings. Most of them won’t, of course, suddenly be wonderful people simply because the year has begun. I wish them all the best, but turning responsibility into habit takes a lot of effort and planning. They believe it, though, so there’s an intense influx of people at the gym, in the foothills, on campus, at the tanning salon, at the car wash, at health food stores, at the tire center, at the bank, and all sorts of other places where they go to attempt to be better people. As such, they throw off the routines of everyone who is simply trying to go about their business.
I think this year I’ll use January as my month to beĀ irresponsibleĀ until all of the lovely people who have a new found sense of giving a fuck and responsibility give up.
